29 Jan All They Need is Love. Or Is It?

Like having a baby, when most people decide to get a pet dog or cat they don’t really think it through. As a baby is with you for life, so it your pet cat or dog for theirs. It is important to remember this and be sure you can really give the new addition to your home the time, love and care they need.

I got Hugo, my French Bulldog, when he was just 10 weeks old. Today, at the staggering age of 13 and half years old he is Australia’s oldest living French Bulldog. Remarkable, considering the breed usually lives till between 8 and 10 years. I believe the main reason Hugo is still with me today is the love, attention and vitamins I give him daily. This is not always easy to do and compromises must be made.

Like most dogs, French bulldogs hate being alone and it is actually really cruel to bring them into your home for a life of solitude, especially when they are a baby. For this reason, many quality French Bulldog breeders will not allow their pups to go to homes of 9 to 5 workers. When Hugo was a baby,  I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a lot of my day time at home. Only in his later years have I not been able to do this, with work commitments now taking up more of my days. To compensate for this, I try and make sure I spend quality weekend and evening time at home with Hugo and take him with me wherever I can.

However tired I am and regardless of what I was up to the night before, I always get up two hours before I start work each day. One of these two hours is dedicated to Hugo. In this hour, I take the time to prepare him a good and healthy breakfast, refresh his water bowl and add the all essential water-soluble vitamin and mineral supplement Petvim. When I return from work I top up his water, give him his dinner and then take him for another walk.
